Attention computer-savy people : HELP!!!!

I've just gone through the most boring, irritating and frustrating computer shopping outing X_X;. I went to this place which I thought was pretty good, since I got my last 2 computers there. It's pretty cool because they let you build your computer from scratch. But the salesman I got was HORRIBLE.

Imagine the most nervous, disfonctionnal nerd. That's him. I took AT LEAST an hour for him to select all the parts for the computer I asked for (verry vaguely, since I'm not very litterate about computer parts and whatnot). Basically I told him I needed a computer tower (no periferals whatsoever) for student work and high level graphic applications such as Photoshop and Maya. No need for game-enhancing stuff, as I never play games on my computer. I had to repeat this several times as he was always raving about this power-supply or video card that did such and such, ugh.

But the worst part: he REALLY didn't seem to know what he was talking about. He just kept telling me about a bunch of motherboards or hard drives or RAM or whatever, which I knew absolutly nothing about, and when I asked him to explain the difference beetween the models or brands, and why I should pick one over the other, his answers were consistently evasive and unsatisfactory. That incompetant son of a gun.

Anyway, I finally got a computer out of him (strictly on paper, of course, I would've never bought the real thing right away), but I have no idea if it's either crap, decent, or too advanced and expensive for what I really need. I'm on a tight budget so I really don't need any expansive bling bling that won't do such a differenec for what I need. I'll do my own investigation, but if you guys have any advice, I'd really apreciate. Here are the specs:

- processor: Intel P4 HT 2.8G/800/512K/S478
- mother board: P4 S478 ASUS P4P800-SE 865PE 4D5P1A
- HardDrive: 80.0 MAXTOR 7200 8MB 6Y080P0
- RAM: Kingston KVR 400 MHZ DDR NO-ECC 512MB C3A
- Video card: ATI AGP Radeon 9600 XT 128M BOX
- Network card: Linksys 10/100 PCI Etherfast LNE100TX *
- casing (...)
- floppy drive (...)

and I already have a Yamaha CD-R/RW drive, so I shouldn't need to buy one, I think.

* is this all you need, hardware-wise, to get online?

Oh and the cost come around to 1200$ canadian.

I'm actually gonna do it!

MY OTAKON REPORT! .. sorta

#Day -02# Tuesday
Preparation for Otakon this year was beyond last minute for me. Basically, I did everything, from packing to making prints, on Tuesday night. I ended up making low-ish amounts of every prints (all from previous years, nothing new) because I had big time printer problems (the lesson learned : don't get ink refills on non-refill cartridges more than once, it just randomly stops working after a while). Anyway, finally went to bed around 3 PM.

#Day -01# Wednesday
Woke up at 5:30 AM, kinda half-conscious, but excited to leave! :D Met up with eaglemaina at the bus station in Montreal. We were actually pretty lucky because we got an express bus to NYC, and the bus was only half filled with passengers, so we could nap on 2 seats if we were tired, and we had a lot of room to move around ^^. Arrived in NYC around 3:30 PM, went to buy a cake for lorelai and dormando, since it was Lore's b-day and both were so kind to have us over at their temporary hotel residence before and after the con ^^. They were supposed to pick us up at the station, but since they were busy with some stuff at their old apt in Staten island, we went on to the hotel on our own. It was quite a ordeal but we made it alive and waited for Lorm in the lobby. Finally met up, went to get some dinner, ran some errands to get gamecube cables for our GBAs, and spent the evening playing FFCC. Good times! :D

#Day 00# Thursday
While Dorm had to go to work that day, the rest of us got up around 9:00 and went to pick up shax at the airport, while et and Ying arrived at the hotel after their bus trip from Toronto. The pre-Otakon N-Y party was complete! After meeting up at the hotel, we all went to get lunch at this nice chinese restaurant across the street, which was cool. Later on, catched up with Dorm at Penn station and finally headed to Baltimore by train. It was my first time travelling by train, it was pretty fun ^^.

...

at this point in my report I'm getting kinda bored ^^;. I think relating the events is kinda bland for me, because the whole trip wasn't really about doing stuff or buying goodies, but really about people. So I'm gonna skip the week-end events and just talk about people I met and fun stuff that happened with them!

So, first night in Baltimore, met up with a bunch of fun people ^o^. Aside from the NYC party, there was <img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif' I hope I didn't forget anyone ^^;. Anyway, all I can say is that EVERYONE was awesome, we had tons of fun, chatted, goofed around and enjoyed our MAGNIFIQUE 3 BEDROOM SUITE, where most of us were staying.

...

getting sleepy here ^^;

#Day 01# Friday

Met up with a bunch of other great people on the first day of the con, namely Julie, Mary, tsukikoushi and her boyfriend, and fluffyduck. It's the first year I really spent some time with Tsukikoushi and bf, and all I can say is that they're some quite pleasant, funny people to hang out with. Pirochan is also such a cool person, I never spoke to her online before, yet she kinda knew who I was and I really had fun chatting with her in the artist alley, and later on in the hotel room, while she was waiting for a tipsy Isamu to pick her up to head for her hotel XD;. Also had a great chat with Ladyfox about mormon culture later that evening. It's so cool to get to know people and learn about their personnality and cultures, especially when they're such interesting and fun people as they all are.

Anyway, also had fun that night, etc etc

#Day 02# Saturday

Headed to the artist alley around noon, hung out and doodled, sold prints, etc. It's always fun and boring sitting in the artist alley, mostly fun though, and I always keep good memories of it ^^. Later that evening I met a bunch of new people after the alley closed down. Juno, Mai and I went to check out the Otakon Rave, but the stench was so unbearable that we just passed and headed to team California's (Kitsy, Kon, Juno, Mai and Jimmy) room to have a little pinsel-engine meeting kinda thing. That's where I met Lanzer and the VuduBerry crew (CP, Patara and Pailin) for the first time. Cool people they are! :D Laine, ET and Isamu were also there, we ate some cheese cake and talked for a good while. At some point the conversation turned to MMORPGs talk, which I'm totally illeterate at, so I just sat there and tried to learn some stuff about the obscure world of online gaming. It was pretty fun, actually, but around 2PM I got pretty sleepy and headed back to the suite where people were still up playing GBA and whatnot. Got to meet rebeccai too, which was a fun surprise! ^o^ I fell dead asleep pretty fast though XD;.

#Day 03# Sunday

...

now I'm really bored, so I'm gonna cut this short. We hung out, people left gradually, good-byes were exchanged, we hung out and ate food, and now I'm back here in NYC with the original party plus Jen Chan. Lore wants to get online and is getting really annoying about it anyway (keheheheheheh ;B), so she's encouraging me to get over with this entry XD;. All in all, I'm really thankful I got to meet and hang out with all those cool people, this week in NYC should be pretty darn fun too. REPORT OVER, OMG I ACTUALLY DID IT, EVEN IT I HALFASSED IT TO DEATH. I hope I can keep in tough with everyone even with School next year ^^;.

PS. I'm too lazy to spell-check this entry, sorry for any writing errors ^^;

Spirited Away

I went out to buy the DVD yesterday morning and finally watched Spirited Away for the first time yesterday night. I am truly and thoroughly astounded, moved and enchanted, this is by far the best animation movie I've ever seen, EVAR!!!!!!!! I mean, I'm speachless, this movie is the epitome of beauty in all aspects, the story, the animation, the CHARACTERS, the GODLY BACKGROUNDS, everything about this true work of art is polished, original and profound to an incredible degree. YET it keeps a level of simplicity, humor and lightheartedness that makes it truly magical. SOOOOO INSPIRING *O* I hadn't enjoyed a movie so much in a long time, seriously, WOW.

The never-ending Meme

I'm out of X-Men pages to render for the moment, so here's the gigantic Meme some people have been doing lately.

x. What is your secret guaranteed weeping movie?

- Studio Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies. I think it's the only movie that ever made me really cry, and that does everytime I watch it ^^;;;.

x. If you could have plastic surgery, what would you have done?

- Liposuction =P

x. Do you have a completely irrational fear?

- Not that I know of. Used to be really scared of spiders, but that's gone.

x. What is the little physical habit that gives away your insecure moment?

- I tend to say random words to fill in silences, like "yup" or "ok" or "sooo...", stupid stuff like that.

x. Are you a pyromaniac?

- I really like looking at flames, and I used to boost ligthers with my bro when I was a kid, but nothing more than that.

x. Do you have too many love interests?

- Too many interests, yes, love, no XD;.

x. Do you know anyone famous?

- My uncle is a virtuoso at Flamenco Guitar and has a couple CDs out in stores, but that doesn't really qualify XD; I once shook the hand and posed for an official picture with the mayor of Taipei, ooooooh.

x. Describe your bed.

- Single bed with three drawers in the bottom section. One drawer contains all the books and novels I read when I was a kid, the second drawer contains all my anime and manga collection, and the third contains all my small souvenirs, programs and newspaper clipings from the many trips, shows and festivals I attended with my folk dance company.

x. Spontaneous or planned?

- Very planned for big stuff, like trips or long-term projects, very spontaneous for smaller stuff.

x. Do you know how to play poker?

- A little ^^;

x. What do you carry with you at all times?

- My gigantic wallet which contains a bagillion things, keys, small change and bus pass.

x. What do you miss most about being little?

- Always being excited about something, waking up at 5:30 AM to litteraly jump out of bed and go play videogames with my dad and bro. Having no worries or responsabilities.

x. Are you happy with your given name?

- I'm ok with it, been liking it more since I started reading more french litterature and seeing it used in many classic novels. There's even a minor character in Notre-Dame de Paris (the "hunchback story" by Victor Hugo) who is named Guillaume Chartier, my exact complete name ^o^. I also like that my name has different translations in almost all of the european languages, Guillermo, Guillerm, William, Whilhelm, etc.

x. How much money would it take to get you to give up the Internet for one year?

- I would readily do it for free. Internet is kinda like, an addictive drug for me ^^;. I really wish I could completely hook off anything related to computers for a while, so that my arms can completely heal, but what makes it the most difficult is that I have many friends online, whom I don't want to lose touch with. Although, friendships don't disapear because you lose touch for a few months ^^;;;. I gotta ponder it over

x. Do you like yourself and believe in yourself?

- Mostly. I don't like some things about me, but I have good confidence and have a firm belief that I can achieve absolutly anything I put my mind to.

x. Do transient, homeless, or starving people bother you?

- Not really, I always end up giving them money when I go out downtown ^^;. Even had small conversations with a few of them, which was pretty cool.

x. Do you consider yourself to be a nice person?

- I've been told by many irl friends that I'm way too nice ^^;.

x. Do you spend more time with your boyfriend/girlfriend or your friends?

- Don't have a gf, so friends!

x. What's one thing you wish you could do but can't?

- Play a musical instrument with ease.

x. What is your ideal marriage location?

- ...

x. Which musical instrument do you wish you could play?

- Violin.

x. Favorite fabric?

- Flanellette sheets, so comfy during winter *o*.

x. Something you love and hate?

- The X-Men? XD

x. Do you tell your friends about your sex life?

- Not really. I have some friends who talk about it extensively though XD;.

x. What's the one language you want to learn?

- Japanese, especially the written language.

x. What do you order at a bar?

- When I do order something, it's either Heineken beer or a Bloody Ceasar.

x. Have you ever pierced your body parts?

- Nope. I don't think it'd fit my style so well.

x. Do you have tattoos?

- Nope, too expensive anyway XD;

x. Do you drive stick?

- Currently learning ^^.

x. What's one trait you hate in a person?

- The innability to really think and rationnalize.

x. What kind of watch(es) do you wear?

- A nifty Skin Swatch I got from Keiiii ^o^

x. Most frivolous purchase?

- Hummm, video-games?

x. Do you consider yourself materialistic?

- Absolutly not.

x. What do you cook the best?

- Home-made mac and cheese.

x. Favorite writing instrument?

- Mechanical pencil.

x. Do you prefer to stand out or blend in?

- Really depends on my mood and situation.

x. What kind of books do you like to read?

- French realism and romantism, contemporary internationnal litterature, manga.

x. If you won the lottery, what would you do?

- Pay my parent's remaining debts, give a lot to all my friends who need it for studies or other stuff, and save for projects and easy-living ^^.

x. What's one thing you're a sore loser at?

- Games or contests requiring intelligence.

x. If you don't like a person, how do you show it?

- I still answer them, but I don't encourage or nurture the conversation. That's how mean I am XD;.

x. Do you cry in front of friends?

- Nope.

x. Are you a giver or a taker?

- I think I'm more of a taker for material stuff, but I give a lot of myself to others, to help out and stuff.

x. When's the last time you cried?

- I think it was last summer, when I watched episode 22 (or 23, 24, I dunno) of the Naruto anime where Haku and Zabuza die XD;;;. THE MUSIC in this episode is incredible.

x. Favorite communication method?

- Talking face to face.

x.
Radio

I've been listening to the radio a lot lately, to keep my energy up when working on the X-Men pages. I just realized, something like 50% of the songs playing either talk about new found love, or mostly, some girl or guy finding out their loved one cheated on them, and how they took their revenge. How boring ^^;;

Resurfacing, for a sec ^^;

Even though the semester's been over for over 2 weeks now (HOLY COW HURRA!!!), some of you may have noticed I haven't been online a lot, which is what this entry is about, partialy. Been doing coloring gigs for Marvel comics with Juno, Kitsy and Isamu for the past 2 months, which has 1)been taking a lot of my free time and 2)been killing my arms and drawing hand, when combined with tons of schoolwork ^^;. My hand and arms are fine-ish now, but I gotta give them time to recover if I want this to not be a long term problem, which would suck more than anything. So, aside from coloring gigs, I won't be getting online a lot for the next few weeks. It sucks but it's necessary :/ . LUCKILY OMG, sketching doesn't hurt my arm or hand, so I still have that left. Thing is, I discovered that today, after 3 weeks of restraining myself from drawing ^^;.

On a different note, MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I tricked my brother into buying volume 1 of Naruto, in french. The translation ROCKS, btw. And of course, what had to happen happened, HE BOUGHT THE WHOLE SERIE, MWUAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAH MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH etc. SO I don't have to feel guilty for reading the scans anymore, AND I get to re-read this oh so beyond awesome work of manga, in delightful french! To celebrate, here's a sketch of some random ninja, with cool Hyuuga eyes! :D

Ah it's that time of year again, fufufufu :3

Crack

I broke a bone in my foot yesterday during a dance practice ^^;. It didn't really hurt that much since it's a minor fracture, but I can't do much activity for the next four weeks. Luckily I won't have to get a full-leg cast, but rather some sort of rigid boot which I can remove when sleeping or relaxing. Now watch the rest of my dance group go crazy when they learn about that. Our final mega dance show is in two weeks ^o^;

In other news, I only have two days of school left! ^O^ With a math exam and three semester projects to hand in tommorow (which are really not done as of right now ^^; ), I think I won't get much sleep tonight :/. Can't wait 'till it's over x_x;

Sheridan: VICTOLY!

So like, yeah, I GOT MY OFFER OF ADMISSION TODAY!!$/£#@&(!!!! So happy ;;;;O;;;; And it only took four phone calls, unbelievable eh? =D;; So yeah, I'll be living in Ontario next year, first time living away from home, how exciting =D. I hope I like the actual animation program too ^^;;; BUT I'll see that in time, although honnestly I'd be pretty surprised if I hated it, from what I've read about animation so far, it all looks pretty darn fun ^o^.

Ahhhhh it's such a relief, I've been thinking about that darn admission every single day since February 20th, now I'm finaly on to something firm. Anyhoo, now I'm off to send my acceptance of admission and residence application, hopefuly the residence people are a bit more punctual and responsible than the admission crowd ^^;. Weeee~

Sheridan: the struggle goes on

Still haven't received a letter from Sheridan ^^;. HOWEVER, I've started to take matters into my own hands, and I've been harassing them over the phone for the past 2 weeks. Here's a rundown of my phone corespondence so far:

First call: I'm told that verything in my file looks complete and dandy and I should be receiving a decision letter by next Wednesday, May 5th. If not, please call back on the 5th.

No letter received by Wednesday, of course.

Second call: After a very unsatisfying conversation with a somewhat incompetent agent, I ask to get transfered to the admission office. Still, I'm told that everything looks fine in my file... *Gwee insists*... WELL well, apparently my english requirements information (which I included in my original file, mind you) wasn't transfered to them for some obscure reason, and I need to fax it over. *THANKS FOR INFORMING ME THAT SOON, SHERIDUNG* So I decide to include a recommendation letter from my english teacher along, just for good luck. The lady at the office then assures me that she'll call me back on Friday to give me an answer. Yay!

No call back from the lady on Friday. x_x;

Third call: Today! The aforementioned lady I spoke to last Wednesday, and who should have my faxed information, ins't there until Wednesday x_x;. And of course, no one else can help me. THANK YOU SHERIDANG

The main problem here, aside from annoyance, is that application for residence on campus has a limit date of May 15, which means REAL SOON. The lady better dang well have a clear answer for me when I call back in two days, or I'll have to go there personnaly and make them see my point... figuratively speaking of course ^^;.

Thankfuly the student ressources at my current college aren't as incoherent, and I went to see my student adviser today. She's super cool and assured me that Sheridan wouldn't get away with that kind of crap. I'll go see her again tommorow and we should be able to work out something, hopefuly.

This wouldn't be an awesome start for my stay at Sheridan, but I've heard the horror stories already. I don't expect too much from the college, actualy, I just want to get there and live the experience. I've kinda been rethinking weither I'd be better off going to Calarts instead, but the money factor is a lot more significant over there ^^;. And besides, I guess that ultimately, no matter what school you go to, you're the one who makes your own success or not. I'll just wait and see.

In other news, only a week left of Cegep, and then I'm FREEEE. I can't believe I might never do any maths ever again after that ^^;.

I've also been working with Juno, Kitsy and Isamu lately for X-men coloring gigs under Udon Comics, it's been pretty fun and crazy so far XD;. My hand is slowly recuperating the damage induced from deadline over-work, thankfuly the pay makes up for the pain, somehow XD;;.

Hope you guys are all doing good, can't wait for summer to come ToT!

OMFG I can't take this anymore, Sheridan is taking such an eternity to send me an answer, it's been almost 3 friggin months since I applied, and two whole months since they evaluated the portfolios, WHAT THE HELL COULD BE TAKING SO LONG!!!? I have so many stresses these days, with the end of semester and Marvel coloring gig, if only I knew weither I was accepted would be SUCH a relief. RAAAAAAHHHHH

Anyway, sorry for this little rant, I just had to let it out x_x;

More ART!

Lj cut for your convenience~

I finished a hard week at school today, and since the academy where I work was closed this evening, I took advantage of this rare work-free friday to relax and draw draw draw, just for the simple fun of it :D. This here actualy started out with only the leftmost girl, but then I thought she looked kinda cool, so I decided to go ahead and make a serie of girls making music (I honnestly think this is the first serie I ever draw ^^;... if you don't count the 2 FFX flower pics ^^;). Then scanned the 3 and put 'em together in photoshop, I gotta admit I'm pretty happy with how it came out ^o^. Might color it someday (someday... ;o;). I'm particularly happy with the violin girl, I had a really hard time pulling her off, but it's the very first violin playing character I succeed at drawing. I had tried to draw that subject times and times before, but it always came out as crap, but now, this looks natural enough, me thinks ^^ (despite the violin handle being a tad long ^^;). Anyway, I hope you guys like it :D

OMg my french teacher is SO COOL. I'm discoverin more and more that he's a total geek. He reads mangas, takes japanese classes, has a website of his own with litterature stuff in it, and he's an Ebay freak XD;. Plus he consistantly plugs those really subtle jokes during classes that most people don't get, and he keeps such a straight face when he does, it's HILARIOUS XD.
OMGGGGGG

I've just done one of the boldest things I've ever done, imo. I have applied for classical animation at Sheridan for the Fall 2004 semester, the processing fees are paid, now all I have to do is send in my grade transcripts and I'm on O_O;;;. This is a VERY BIG DEAL for me, I'm very excited, worried, scared, uncertain and anxious towards this, but DAMMIT if I always stay on the safe road and never kick my ass to try scary but exciting stuff, I feel like I'll have missed a lot of stuff in my life. Me going to Sheridan is such an abstract/impossible concept in my brain that my rationality can't seem to accept it, so for this I'm just switching to instinct mode until (or if ^^;) I do get there and can actualy realise it. I'm pretty confident that I can get accepted (don't want to sound too full of myself ^^;), but the whole process of going to study in frikkin' Oakvile Ontario and leaving Montreal is WEIRD. But I want to try it, no matter what! And if stuff doesn't work out, well there's always industrial Design in Montreal University! XD;

It's the second day of the semester and I'm here in the computer lab, BORED OUT OF MY MIND x_x;. Had physics at 8:00 but since it's the first class of the semester it lasted only an hour instead of three, so for the last hour and a half I've been fruitlessly looking around for pals (they must all be in class ^^;) and vedgetating around in here. I ALMOST wish I had homework to occupy myself XD;.

Yesterday was kind of a rough start, I had 6 hours of art classes total, which could've been fun, but it was a bit boring to be honnest :/. Watching projections on a screen for 2 hours isn't exactly my definition of fun, and it surely wasn't a good way to get me started for the rest of the day. In the aftrenoon we all went dowtown to the Museum of Contemporary Arts and other galleries, which was kinda fun.

In other news, I have to send in my application for university in no more than a month! (for those of you wondering, university does come in a bit later in Quebec, since we have to go through Cegep, or college/pre-university, beforehand, which takes 2 to 3 years) I'm considering applying for industrial design, I met this dude in the plane coming back from Puerto Rico who had his own company, we chatted a bit and it really interested me towards this particular field of study. I'm not 100% sure about that choice though. Other possibilities would include 2D or 3D animation, translation (really not sure about this one though ^^;), and that's about it. I'm always open to other possibilities but the problem is, I have no idea what those other choices could be. Augh hard decisions >_

Heyyy just came back from Puerto Rico this afternoon. The trip was so GREAT TTToTTT I'm so post-partumy right now ._. The weather was perfect, the place my group and I stayed at was awesome (we had a really comfy small apartment complex for the 30 of us, it was like living as a big family ;O;), the group atmosphere was very pleasant and harmonious, I had a BLAST living in the same apt with 3 of my very good friends for 2 weeks. LE SIGH OF NOSTALGY.

But aside from that, I have to admit it was pretty nice to get away from all the stuff revolving around my everyday life. Not really for the sake of taking a break and forgetting about stressful stuff, but more for the pleasure of only concentrating on ONE thing for a while, in this case, my folk company. I mean, I'm always looking to get involved with new and interesting stuff, and I always take on new projects for my own enjoyment, but sometimes I feel like I have so many things to keep up with that it's frustrating. And the thing is, all those things that keep me busy (friends, hobbies, work, etc) are really important to me, so I can't just say "screw that" or "forget about this gang" because I just don't want to ^^;;. But for the last two weeks, I was literaly FORCED to give everything a break and just concentrate on one of the things I hold dearly. I feel like I was able to savour it a lot more because it was isolated too.

Maybe I've been taking on a bit more than I can handle lately, at least for my own good. I wish I'd be able to cram all the stuff I want in my schedules, I guess we all do ^^;, but maybe this year I should make a resolution to sacrifice some of the less important things in my life in order to enjoy the more important ones more fully.

Actualy, this pretty much comes back to what my philosophy teacher was telling us last year, which was more like an example of a general concept: student these days are going crazy because they can't get themselves to only being students; they gotta have a job, a car, go clubbing, (or less stereotypical activities ^^;), etc. I mean, I don't think you really have to live like a nun to keep your sanity, but maybe an inbetween would be better. Now excuse me while I go hammer my brains out trying to figure out how to reorganise my priorities x_x;

Oh and btw, I didn't really get a tan during my trip, and BOOHOOHOO I want summer weather again TOT
